Role of women on the Australian home front:
  1. How did Australian women at home contribute to the war effort? What were some of their experiences like (find sources to support this)?
  2. How did the involvement in the war of Australian women differ from that of German and British women? Why?

Role of Australian women on the Western front:
  1. In what occupation did Australian women serve on the Western front?
  2. Where were some of the places where Australian women served on the Western front?
  3. What were the experiences of some of the Australian nurses on the front?
Conscription in Australia during WWI:
  1. What is conscription?
  2. What were Australian Prime Minister Hughes’ reasons for wanting to introduce conscription? Why did Hughes introduce a referendum on the issue?
  3. Outline the results of the first and second referendums on the issue of conscription.
  4. Outline which groups in Australia were for and against conscription and why.
  5. What were some of the reasons some people and groups supported conscription?
    What were some of the reasons some people and groups opposed conscription?

Who won the War and why?

Conditions in the Trenches
  1. Give a description of a typical trench on the Western front. What were some of its features (you can use a diagram if you like)?
  2. Explain how the trenches were used in battle?
  3. What were the experiences of soldiers living in the trenches during WWI? How do you think they would have felt?

The Battle of the Somme
  1. Give a brief description of the Battle of the Somme.
  2. What was the role of the Australian Infantry Force (AIF) in the Battle of the Somme?
  3. In your opinion, was the Battle of the Somme a success for the Allies or not? Give facts and evidence to support your answer.

Where Australians Fought during WWI
  1. List the main places where Australia fought in World War I. Give a brief description of each and the contribution of the Australian forces to each battle (go into a little bit more detail than that given on the handout –use the internet to find this information).
  2. Explain the difference between foot-soldiers, light-horsemen and nurses.



Propaganda
  1. How did recruitment propaganda achieve its aim of getting men to enlist? Give some examples from recruitment posters.
  2. Describe some of the main features of conscription propaganda (for and against conscription). Use examples in your answer.
